Beef Curry in the Dominican Republic

Being from England, I am an avid curry fan but unfortunately there are no real Indian restaurants in the Dominican Republic. I often get asked this a lot from clients who are English as well. A chap tried to open one up a couple of years ago near Sosua, however, the location and prices made it unsuccessful. Finding myself with some free time yesterday afternoon, I found a basic recipe and added a few personal touches to make a typical South Indian style Beef curry. Very simple to do and all these ingredients are available from the Playero supermarket in Sosua as well as the larger supermarkets around the country e.g. La Sirena, Jumbo, National etc…

You will need the following:

1 kg beef cubes
Couple of chopped onions
2” piece ginger
6-7 garlic cloves
5 green chillies, slit
5 tomatoes, chopped
2 tsp kashmiri chilli powder
1 tbsp coriander powder
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
4 green cardamom pods (I do not remember seeing these in Playero, but I must have bought them from somewhere, as they were in the house)
1” piece cinnamon
3 pieces cloves
2 potatoes, peeled and cubed to big pieces
1 400g can coconut milk
salt, to taste

Heat up the oil in a large pan and sauté the onions till they just about turn brown and are translucent. Grind the ginger and garlic together to a paste and add this to the onions. Add the green chillies as well. After a couple of mins, add the tomatoes and sauté well till the tomatoes are soft and the oil can be seen on the sides. Now add the chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, cardamom, cinnamon and cloves. Sauté well. At this stage, add the beef and mix properly. Add the coconut milk and some water in the pan to cover the beef. Cook on a low hear from about 3 hours until the meat is incredibly tender  Now add the potatoes and cook till the potatoes are just about done and throw some chopped coriander (cilantro) on top. I always add salt at the end to adjust for taste. Serve with Basmati rice. Simply delicious. Sorry, I can not find my camera, so no photos.

New Gadgets added to our website

Couple of small changes to report that some users might find useful.

If you own your own website and it is related to real estate, Caribbean, Dominican Republic, home or travel (domestic and international), you can now add your website to our directory page by emailing us at web@coralbayrealestate.com  . You will need to place a link to our site which is at http://www.coralbayrealestate.com (Remax Dominican Republic Real Estate).

No 'cheekiness' please!  When I last checked to see who was still linking back to us, I found a staggering 70% of websites that we link to dropped our exchange to unfairly benefit from 1 way links. You have been warned! I have installed a back-link checker and will be using it at least once a month. The new method checks for link backs once in a while and will add 'no-follow' attributes to your link on our pages until you place the link back. At worst, it will be deleted completely. Oh...and no adult or offensive websites please.

You can follow our blog on our home page as well with a neat little google gadget,  as well as on our facebook page located  http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Sosua-Dominican-Republic/Remax-Coral-Bay-Realty/120124408045502 become a fan and get notified the instant new listings go online.

Other gadgets added to the website include a google translate button and an addthis link, to make it easier to watch news related to the Dominican Republic and real estate listings in Sosua and Cabarete in your favorite social website. Any suggestions or comments for improvements to our Dominican Republic Real Estate page are always welcome.
